बहुत खेद की बात है कि भारतीय विश्वविद्यालयों के युवक-युवतियों को गीता और हिन्दू धर्म-सिद्धान्तों का ज्ञान यूरोपीय विश्व विद्यालयों के छात्रों के बाइबिल तथा ईसाई धर्म-सिद्धान्तों के ज्ञान की अपेक्षा बहुत कम है। हिन्दू धर्म में ऐसे विचारों का उत्तराधिकार प्राप्त है, जो योग्यतम विचारकों के मतानुसार, इस दिशा में प्रयुक्त बुद्धि और कल्पना-शक्ति के सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रयत्नों से विकसित हुए हैं। यदि हमारे दर्शन-शास्त्र का उत्तराधिकार किसी पाश्चात्य राष्ट्र के युवक- युवतियों को प्राप्त हुआ होता तो वह उनके लिए साम्राज्य प्राप्ति के समान गौरव की वस्तु होता।
यह छोटी-सी पुस्तक मुख्यतः विद्यार्थियों के उपयोग के लिए लिखी गई है। यदि इन पृष्ठों को पढ़ते समय विद्यार्थियों को मूल अथवा टीका में कोई ऐसे प्रसंग मिलें, जो संतोषजनक न हों या अस्पष्ट अथवा मतभेद उत्पन्न करने वाले मालूम होते हों तो उन्हें सहपाठियों से चर्चा करनी चाहिए या विद्वानों से समझना चाहिए। जिस महान धार्मिक दर्शन के लिए भारत समस्त सभ्य संसार में प्रख्यात है, उसके सिद्धान्तों का अच्छा ज्ञान न रखने वाला कोई भारतीय यथेष्ट शिक्षित होने का दावा नहीं कर सकता।
Students of Indian universities know much less about the Gita and the principles of Hinduism than undergraduates of European universities know about the Bible and Christianity. The present handbook is a welcome step towards correcting this sad situation.
The present book has been written mainly to serve as a Hand Book for students. The subject wise classwise classification of the topics on which the Gita dwells is greatly useful for the students, as it helps him to acquire a broad yet systematic view of the Gita’s philosophy as a whole. The value of this book for the beginner lies especially in the fact that there is a conscious effort on the learned author’s part to refrain from making it a book for scholars.
